Ethernet management questions

Q: What does it mean when an Ethernet controller has “management?” And what do Ethernet controller manufacturers mean when they say “full” management?

OAR: Those are pretty vague terms, but usually standard management means including MIBs (Management Information Bases) for SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). “Full” management means extended MIBs to support advanced higher-layer control, such as via XML. But there’s no real standard meaning for the terms. –lw

What!?! No LED TVs?

Q. Big screens are getting even more confusing now that the LED TVs are coming out. I wouldn’t think you could make a home TV with LEDs!

OAR: You are the victim of a marketing ploy. There are no LED TVs for the home, although really big screens for signage and stadium displays are usually made of LED modules. Individual LEDs are far bigger than a typical TV pixel, and LED displays can’t come close to achieving the resolution required for a home TV. What’s being advertised as LED TVs are actually LCD TVs using next-generation backlighting based on LEDs. The LEDs offer tremendous advantages here, particularly for screen aesthetics. –dl
